(2)Take me back to the house in the backyard tree Said you'd beat me up, you were bigger than me You never did, you never did Take me back when our world was one block wide I dared you to kiss me and ran when you tried Just two kids, you and I... Oh my my my my

(4)Take me back to the creek beds we turned up Two A.M. riding in your truck and all I need is you next to me Take me back to the time we had our very first fight The slamming of doors instead of kissing goodnight You stayed outside till the morning light Oh my my my my
(5)A few years had gone and come around We were sitting at our favorite spot in town And you looked at me, got down on one knee
(6)Take me back to the time when we walked down the aisle Our whole town came and our mamas cried You said I do and I did too Take me home where we met so many years before We'll rock our babies on that very front porch After all this time, you and I

1. What statement or comment about love or relationships are the lyrics making? Include an analysis of the title as well. * The song I chose is about a girl and boy who were 2 years apart, friends since they were kids, pretty much grew up together, and then ended up getting married. The kids’ dads would always joke about them growing up and falling in love but they didn’t really believe it would happen. The statement I think the song is saying is that sometimes love can be surprising because they didn’t really know that someday they would be marrying each other but that’s just what turned out happening. The title is called Mary’s Song, so I think the girl in the songs name is Mary and it talks about how she met her true love so it’s Her Song. 2. Write a response to that statement. Do you agree/disagree, can you or someone you know relate to this type of situation? * I do agree with this song because I think it’s possible to marry someone that you knew since you were little and were really close with. Many people aren’t lucky enough to actually grow up with somebody and then marry them but it is possible. I do in fact know some people who can relate to this type of situation: my parents. They weren’t necessarily together since they were kids but they did meet in high school and started dating. Then they got married and are still together and happy today. 3. Discuss the structure of the song. Is there a definite rhyme scheme? Are there any other noticeable patterns? Explain. What genre/style of music is used? Does it fit the lyrics or the statement that the artist is making? Explain. * Well, the structure of the song I’d say basically is: in each verse the boy and girl are older and still hanging out together. I guess there is some rhyming in the song also. The main pattern I noticed is that she says how their dads were joking about them falling in love, their moms were always rolling their eyes saying “Oh my”, and she always says she looked at the boy like the stars that shined in the sky. Plus in each verse the couple is a little older. The genre of the song is Country Pop because it’s a Taylor Swift song and there is some guitar in it but it’s also pretty popular and she doesn’t have a really strong country accent or anything. The genre does sort of fit with the song since she refers to her mom as “mamma” and she talked about riding in a truck with her boyfriend and going to creek beds together which kind of fits the country style. The pop music fits in too, because it’s a love song and most pop songs have something to do with love.
Act 2
Advice Letter
I received a letter from a lovely young lady named Juliet who has gotten herself into a pretty tricky situation. She says she’s madly in love with a handsome young man named Romeo, who she just met at a dance, and they’re planning to get married. Not only that, but their two families have been fighting for years and don’t even know about the two lovers yet. Okay Juliet, here’s my advice to you:
Dear Juliet,
I know you’re dealing with a really tricky situation here, but I’m going to try my best to help you out. You and Romeo are very young so your need to think out big decisions like this before you go straight into action. You said in your letter that you two just met, so first of all, I want you to think it over and make sure you really love him as much as you say you do. Okay, now since you probably think you love him with all your heart, here’s what you need to do.
First, you absolutely have to tell someone about you guys being together. You said you told the nurse which is a start, and you obviously told the priest also. Now you should probably go to your mother for guidance. Once you tell her everything I believe you’ll probably feel like a huge weight has been lifted off your shoulders. Explain to her how much you love him and why you feel the need to get married. She may be surprised and possibly a little upset but I’m sure it will be worth it in the end. She can help you figure things out and maybe even break it to the rest of the family for you. Just as long as you aren’t the only one who knows.
Plus, if you don’t tell your family what’s going on, there could be many consequences. Trust me, you cannot just get married without you family knowing! Then, without telling them ahead of time, they would be very angry. If one day they found out you got married to an enemy without even telling them first, they would be extremely furious. They would most likely feel like you went behind their backs and betrayed them. But, if you told them ahead of time and they didn’t agree, then they would seem like the bad guys for not backing you up and you would’ve at least done what’s right. Also, make sure you don’t start making up any lies because you would surely get sick of living out a lie every day.
As you can see, I strongly suggest telling your family. It definitely could be hard and involve some issues but it’s worth it. Keeping it a secret and getting married without telling anyone would result in way more problems for you and Romeo, plus a lot of regret. I truly hope you follow my advice and it helps you a lot. I wish you both lots of luck!

The Deadly Duels! Two men, Mercutio Montague and Tybalt Capulet, were killed in a tragic battle which took place in the streets of Verona! It all began when Tybalt spotted Romeo Montague at the Capulet’s ancient feast. Benvolio Montague, Romeo, and Mercutio were talking in the streets of their town when out of nowhere Tybalt appeared, flustered and ready to duel! He had his mind set on killing Romeo, but Romeo wanted nothing to do with a fight. Little did anyone know, Romeo had secretly just gotten married to Tybalt’s little cousin, Juliet Capulet.
Tybalt refused to leave until he got what he wanted, so Mercutio decided to step in. They eventually drew their swords but Romeo shoved between them to try to prevent the battle. Suddenly, Tybalt just reached over and stabbed Mercutio under Romeo’s arm! There was one down, and one more to go. They got Mercutio to a doctor but sadly he didn’t make it. After a few minutes, Tybalt was back for Romeo!
Romeo was obviously upset after witnessing his friend get stabbed, plus he knew it was either him or Tybalt who would die that day. I think Romeo decided he didn’t really feel like dying . . . so the fight went on! They danced around the streets with their swords, but this time it was Tybalt who would fall. Benvolio witnessed the entire fight, along with maybe a few street people. We later found out that the main cause of the fight was because of a huge family feud between the Montagues and Capulets, which has been going on for years and obviously still continues. Unfortunately the fight resulted in the deaths of two young men. I’m quite sure that if the situation was dealt with in a different manner, it’s certainly possible that it wouldn’t have turned out this way. I guess we shall never know. . .
Act 4
Parents vs. Teenagers
My parents have many rules which I think are very important. Some may not even officially be rules, but expectations. I’m glad my parents have rules for me though, because it shows that they love and care about me, and they want me to become a better person. If they would just let me go around and do whatever I please, I could’ve possibly done many reckless and stupid things that I would regret. My parents used rules to teach me right from wrong, and I’m so thankful that they did!
First of all, my parents set a few rules for around the house. I’m not supposed to play around with any electronics unless the dishes are done because that’s my chore that pays for my cell phone. I have a younger sister and brother and we aren’t supposed to fight or call each other names, although we still do sometimes anyway. I’m not supposed to talk back or be disrespectful to my parents. They tell me to try my hardest in school to get good grades, and if I got bad grades I’d probably get privileges taken away until I got them back up. I have to ask them before I go anywhere or make plans. A big rule they have for us is no swearing and obviously I’m not allowed to do anything illegal like drink alcohol, smoke, nor do drugs (which I would never do anyways). If they ever set a rule that I didn’t think was fair I know I could talk to them and they’d be understanding and maybe make an exception (like dating or something). I agree with most of their rules because they are definitely pretty fair and reasonable. I know they set rules for me because they love me and want to keep me safe and out of trouble, and raise me to be a respectful person.
I certainly have consequences for breaking a rule, I mean, what’s the point of a rule if there is no punishment for breaking it, right? If I do something minor, then usually I just get yelled at, which I consider a reminder not to repeat whatever it was I got in trouble for. Sometimes if I continue to do something they don’t like, then they will give me a warning like “If you do that again I’m taking your iPod!” I guess consequences are surely the main reason I try to avoid breaking rules. I definitely don’t want to do something really bad and stupid and then get grounded. It’s really just easier to behave myself and follow the rules (which aren’t even very strict). I think my parents have normal, basic rules that most parents would set for their teenagers.
It’s very interesting to talk to my parents about rules! They used to have lots of rules that were way worse than mine. They had to be in bed by a certain hour and they were hardly ever allowed to watch T.V. because their parents controlled it. My mom said even when she had friends spend the night she still had to go to bed early. Plus, my parents had to eat all their food (no matter how full they were or how much they may not have liked it) and stay at the table until they were excused. My mom only got to have a few big birthday parties, but I have one every year. If they would break the rules, they’d get yelled at, grounded, or have things taken away. My mom said she thought the rules were fair, but my dad said he got grounded all the time and his parents were too strict (which he still believes to this day, and I kind of agree after all that he told me).
As you can see, rules are very important! I have many rules and expectations, and consequences for breaking them, too. I know if my parents didn’t discipline me the way they do, I would’ve had to learn every lesson the hard way and probably wouldn’t have turned out to be the same person that I am today. I’m so glad I have parents that love me enough to set rules. It may sound crazy, but it means they love me and they only want the best to come out of it; they don’t do it to be mean. No matter how much I may not want to follow them at times, later on I always realize that rules are set for a good reason.
Act 5
If only . . . New Ending
After Friar John told Juliet the potion plan and she stood there and thought it over for a while . . . and she finally decided to try it out. She knew ahead of time that if it didn’t work out in the end, she’d just resort to killing herself anyway because she couldn’t stand to live without Romeo. She waited until the day before the wedding to take the potion. Friar John sent a messenger to Mantua to inform Romeo on the plan. As soon as Romeo received the letter he hurried to Verona to sneak Juliet out of the tomb. Juliet was beginning to awaken while Romeo was trying to get past the people without being noticed. Juliet was starting to get worried, and when she saw Romeo come up to the tomb her heart skipped a beat. She was so excited to see him, and couldn’t wait to get out of there! Juliet gave a huge thank you to the Friar and then they rushed out of there before they had a chance to get caught. Moments later, Paris snuck out to the tomb to see Juliet’s body. He was completely shaken when he discovered she was nowhere to be found! He informed Juliet’s family right away, and everyone instantly ran out to verify what they hoped wasn’t true. Her body had vanished, and not one person there knew how it happened or where she could be. The Friar saw how confused and upset the Capulet family was, and he just couldn’t take it anymore. He decided to tell them about everything: Romeo and Juliet getting married, the potion which caused her to seem dead, and them sneaking off to Mantua together. They looked completely stunned by the time he was finished! They all wanted to know why he kept that a secret for so long, and he thought of the perfect answer. He said “I helped them out because they loved each other so much that they said they’d rather die than have to live without one another, and I’d rather have them alive and happy together, than dead”. The Capulets realized how strong Romeo and Juliet’s love for each other actually was, and even though it was against everything they had ever believed about the Montagues, they all agreed that they’d much rather have Juliet be happily married to their enemy than dead so they could never even see her again. They concluded that they needed to have a talk with the Montagues, no matter how much they were going to hate it. Once the Montagues were updated on the whole crazy situation, they formed a plan. They were going to put their differences aside because it wasn’t worth it anymore, and they were going to get Romeo and Juliet back and let them live a long, happy life together with the family’s blessing. The Friar was sent to tell Romeo and Juliet the joyful news. After he told them, they were in complete shock! They never would’ve thought that just telling their family how they felt would’ve actually been easier than doing everything in secret. When they arrived back home at Mantua, their families had a huge party for them and they lived happily ever after!
What happened differently? * First of all, Juliet didn’t talk to her dad at all before taking the potion so he didn’t reschedule the wedding, which gave Romeo more time to get the letter and head to Verona. Because of that, they actually managed to sneak to Mantua together, so when Paris checked the grave, Juliet wasn’t even there. Then, the Friar decides to tell everyone what was going on and the family actually accepts it and lets Romeo and Juliet be together and come back to live with them in Verona, where they become the happiest couple of that time.

Love Song Anlysis
Mary's Song By: Taylor Swift
(1)She said, I was seven and you were nineI looked at you like the stars that shined
In the sky, the pretty lights
And our daddies used to joke about the two of us
Growing up and falling in love and our mamas smiled
And rolled their eyes and said oh my my my
(2)Take me back to the house in the backyard tree
Said you'd beat me up, you were bigger than me
You never did, you never did
Take me back when our world was one block wide
I dared you to kiss me and ran when you tried
Just two kids, you and I...
Oh my my my my
(3)Well, I was sixteen when suddenly
I wasn't that little girl you used to see
But your eyes still shined like pretty lights
And our daddies used to joke about the two of us
They never believed we'd really fall in love
And our mamas smiled and rolled their eyes
And said oh my my my...
(4)Take me back to the creek beds we turned up
Two A.M. riding in your truck and all I need is you next to me
Take me back to the time we had our very first fight
The slamming of doors instead of kissing goodnight
You stayed outside till the morning light
Oh my my my my
(5)A few years had gone and come around
We were sitting at our favorite spot in town
And you looked at me, got down on one knee
(6)Take me back to the time when we walked down the aisle
Our whole town came and our mamas cried
You said I do and I did too
Take me home where we met so many years before
We'll rock our babies on that very front porch
After all this time, you and I
(7)I'll be eighty-seven; you'll be eighty-nine
I'll still look at you like the stars that shine
In the sky, oh my my my my

We were just two kids, you and I
